Reconnecting With Your Faith

As believers, sometimes we lose sight of Christ and almost disconnect from Him entirely. Whether it’s because you’re going through a trial or it’s because you’ve just slipped, either way, something has pushed you away from Jesus. One day you’re on fire for Christ and want nothing more than to worship Him with your whole life, then the next day, you just no longer have a desire to worship God, to read your bible and or even say simple prayers in the morning and night. To do anything related to Christ becomes a chore. I personally went through times like this repeatedly and when I looked back, I found one reoccurring theme- my focus had been shifted away from Christ each time.

For some reason, people seem to believe that as soon as you become born again in Christ, a natural hunger for Christ just grows inside of you and that your first and last thoughts in the day are of God and nothing else. Even though some people may be filled with Spirit in the initials stages of being born again, it will not last unless you start building a relationship with God. You must immediately set time apart for God during your day and spend it with Him diligently. Having the desire to worship Christ will not come unless you worked at it and keep building on that initial fire.

You need to renew your mind daily!

” Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” – Romans 12;2 (NLT)

This world is filled with so many things designed to distract us, that if you do not guard your heart, you will be back to the same old sins before you know it. Salvation is only the starting point of Christianity, but you need to keep building yourself up in Christ, you can’t just stop there. You need to learn to fight spiritually!

Don’t think that just because you’ve given your life to Christ, the devil will leave you alone. It is the exact opposite as you become a target as soon as you make Christ your identity but God has equipped us with the power to resist him. He will use every ammunition possible to pull you away from Christ, and that is what leads to all those days when you feel far away from Him. It’s because your focused has been shifted. Something or someone has replaced God in your life and now you feel lost because Christ is no longer at the centre of your life. There is no longer room in your heart for Christ to live. He has been pushed out by everything you value and prioritise above Him, whether that be relationships, education, work or even just your life. You want to do what you want when you want. You cannot work with Christ like that. That is not a life that Christ can use because you’re not ready to be used. When you give your life to Christ, you are emptying it so that you can be filled with the Holy Spirit. But if you allow yourself to be filled with other things that work against the Spirit of God, Christ will just withdraw and wait for you to be ready to empty yourself before He can fill you. Dark and light cannot mix!

” The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” – John 1:5 (NLT)

What’s more, when you submit yourself and your will to the Holy Spirit, you immediately become transformed. However, when you only give up half of your life to Christ, He cannot transform you. Christ doesn’t do piecemeal jobs. He either has all of you or none of you. You must be either hot or cold with God, there is no in between.

“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” – Revelations 3:15-16 (NLT)

If you’re being reluctant to give your whole life to Christ then you will still be an old vessel and new wine cannot be poured into you, otherwise that vessel will break, (Matthew 9:16-17). To put it simply, the Holy Spirit is incompatible with anyone who has not been entirely washed by the blood of Jesus. So, if you are experiencing those off days where you just do not feel like spending time with God, you must ask yourself, “Have I surrendered my all to Christ?”  “Am I truly rooted in Him, or half in Him and half in the world?”.  If you are going to Church every Sunday, Bible Study every Wednesday, Night Vigil every Friday and you still haven’t experienced a permanent change in your life, then you need to re-evaluate yourself. You need to truly search your heart and see what’s inside that is taking God’s place in your life, because something must be if you’re still going around the same old mountain of not wanting to read your bible and spend time with God. It’s because you’ve disconnected from the source of your faith – Jesus, and you need to desperately reconnect with your faith again before the negative changes become rooted within you and harder to change.

You need to open your heart to God honestly. You need to speak to your Father, who loves you so dearly, and tell Him what is going on in your life. Tell Him what you are holding on to and just let it go. It is not worth it. There is no formula for these things; it’s just between you and God. You just need to let it all go. Open the tap of your heart and flush it all out, because what God will fill you with will transform your life beyond your highest expectations. You will truly feel the greatest love that has ever touched this earth but you must let go of every single distraction and open your heart for Jesus to take His place as Your Lord and Saviour.

The Next Steps:

  • Opening your heart can be hard and uncomfortable, but I would encourage you to buy a journal and just journal to God. Write all your feelings down: your worries, your cares, just everything that is going on in your life. Nothing is too small or too big for Jesus. “Cast all your cares on Him, because he cares for you” – I Peter 5:7
  • Fix a time in the morning and evening to spend time in fellowship with God. If you have to get up at 6:30am for work or school, start getting up at 6:00 am. 30 minutes may seem long for some or short for others but the important thing is that you are consistent with it. By doing the same in the evening as well, you are showing God how much He matters to you. Start and end your day with the word of God. It will make a difference to your life.
  • Wake up with prayer and worship every morning. There is nothing that prayer cannot solve. If you just don’t feel like doing anything, pray your way through those feelings. Worship will just change the whole atmosphere of your day and life. The Holy Spirit will never abandon a genuine heart.
  • Renew your mind every day with the word of God. Having a journal to write down your thoughts on passages of the Bible (or even any questions you have) is highly recommend, no matter how developed your relationship with God is.

Aww this is so cute. I’m definitely going to start a journal to God as a method of trying to get close to him. This blog is really helpful.
